Let's start with the ink cubes. I have a limited selection of Gina K cubes, mostly for stamping the occasional sentiment in something other than black. I do however have nearly every color of Tim Holtz Distress Ink in cubes. To get the same color scheme Gina K. used, I had to use Distress Inks.
My next challenge was shopping my stash for some chunky butterflies that would work with the technique. I pulled the Tim Holtz Papillion from my stash and set about inking the larger of the two butterfly stamps in the set. Magic happened by accident. When I pulled the stamp of choice off the sheet it was dirty. Dirty stamps don't mix with light-colored inks like the yellow I was about to use, so I misted it with water and wiped it clean with my towel. This left the stamp a little damp when I started applying the yellow and orange inks. When I pulled my stamp off the paper I saw that I got a bit of a watercolor effect, as Distress Inks are water-reactive inks.
I have a similar approach to Kelly Taylor when it comes to card making, I don't start over unless it's a total loss. We can talk about that later. Rather than be mad at the watercolor effect I went with it. I wiped the stamp clean of colored ink and applied my black. I used a little messier approach to my image. Instead of using a marker for the body, I used the corner of my black ink pad. I also took my black blending brush and kind of buffed out any hard edges before stamping.
The completed panel made me think of vintage insect books with the coloring and it sparked the idea for the finished card. I've had the cork sheets in my stash for years! This is why I preach about shopping your stash. I saw this panel as if it was on a vintage cork board in an entomologist's office somewhere.
I took my completed panel, die cut it with the Stacked Deckle dies, inked the edges, and distressed the corners a bit. The cork panel was cut to 5 1/2 x 4 inches and mounted on a black card base. Then I added dies to my butterfly panel and used collage medium to adhere it to the cork. To finish the card I added a small word sticker.
